Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0 HP Waste Disposer Review
Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0 Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste Disposal Review
If you are a homeowner, you probably have a garbage disposal. Most individuals don’t realize how useful a garbage disposal is until theirs breaks down and they no longer have the convenience associated with these awesome home appliances. If you have ever bought or replaced a garbage disposal, you have more than likely heard of the Waste King brand.
Waste King is known to offer the best warranties and service available, and make a great line of high-quality garbage disposals. The Waste King L-8000 is top-of-the-line when it comes to their Legend series. People who have owned a WK product have grown to have high expectations on effectiveness and efficiency, so the L-8000 makes sure to deliver nothing less.
Motor Power & Performance
If you cook a lot like my family, you are bound to have a lot of food waste. Potato peels, egg shells, fruit rinds, and even old left overs can be quickly disposed of thanks to the 1 horsepower, 2800 RPM “Vortex” permanent magnet motor. One horsepower is at the top end of the available power a garbage disposal can offer. The highest power I’ve seen was 1 ¼ HP, and those are extremely rare.
No matter what you put down in the disposal, it eats it up in literally seconds. If you had a party to watch the big game and made large batches of Buffalo wings, you could easily throw the left over bones down the disposal and watch them get ground into bits in a few seconds.
The Waste King L-8000 is a continuous feed disposal which means you can add food waste while it is running which helps save time and energy. Continuous feed disposals are the most common to see, and they are the easiest to use. Batch feed models require you to load up the disposal, close and lock the lid, then activate the unit. Simply push the food waste into a continuous feed disposal and flip on the switch. Much quicker and much easier.
Materials & Components
If you have had a garbage disposal rust and corrode just to break down right when you need it, you’ll appreciate the corrosion-resistant, glass-filled nylon grinding chamber. The grinding components are all stainless steel which makes them long-lasting. Even if you are a handyman, nobody really wants to have to keep replacing their garbage disposal every few years so this model is a great investment.
Almost anyone who has used an older model garbage disposal can tell you that when turned on, the noise resembles a bunch of rocks in a blender. Luckily, by today’s standards, garbage disposals must be much quieter. The Waste King L-8000 tries to bring the noise level down to a minimum hum by sound insulating all of the grinding components to produce the quietest grind you can imagine.
If you have a septic tank, you need not worry about what might happen if you get the wrong disposal. The Waste King L-8000 is suited to work wonderfully with septic tanks as well as sewer systems and installs easily, within an hour or two.
There is no need to be a plumbing or electrical specialist to understand how to install and hook up the product. Since it comes with a power cord, you just need to be near a plug; no need to hardwire it in to existing wiring. The model comes with a EZ mount installation system which means setting this bad boy up is a breeze.
The Waste King L-8000 is 14.25 inches tall, 9 inches wide, and 9 inches in length. Overall, it’s a pretty big model and many customers commented on how much space it took up. While no one seemed to have a problem getting it to fit under the sink, most noticed that it was a tight squeeze once they got it under the sink.
The Waste King L-8000 is a large, heavy-duty grinder compared to most models. Whether you are a chef by trade or simply a cooking enthusiast, you are sure to enjoy the design and efficiency of this product.

A good thing to remember is that the higher the HP, the less jams you will have. Most professionals recommend a unit that has ¾ HP or more since they will have smoother operations, grind a wider range of materials and food waste, and produce a finer pulverization of food products making them best for septic systems.
This unit is particular good for people who want to install the disposal themselves. No electrical experience is necessary since it comes with a power cord. Simply attach the power cord to the unit, then plug into the wall.
I want to add something here on whether this unit needs to be on a dedicated circuit or not, but I’m not sure how to go about deciding that. Maybe you can help me learn how to determine this.
The warranty on this product is amazing. As long as you live in the house where your garbage disposal was originally installed, you will have lifetime in-home service available to you should something happen to the unit.
Inside the box you will find the Waste King Legend 8000 unit, the mounting hardware, and the power cord.
The Waste King 1025 Sink Stopper & Splash Guard, the Waste King 3101 ISE Adapter Kit (which allows you to convert a 3-bolt mount into an EZ mount flange to accommodate the Waste King disposal), the Waste King FRC-4016 Fiber Optic Controller Base Unit & the Waste King FOS-4017-SN Fiber Optic Controller Switch so you can install a one-touch control switch to operate the disposal at your convenience in the location of your choice (no hard wiring necessary).
Other than the fact that this unit works like a charm, people loved the fact that it was so easy to install. If you have a stainless steel sink, there is no need to mess with plumber’s putty, it comes with a rubber gasket instead. The unit already comes assembled in the proper manner when you receive the box giving you a good idea of exactly the order things will need to be put together. Install the top part into the drain portion of your sink, then twist the unit on from the underneath, plug in the power cord, and PRESTO! You are now ready to grind.
There were a few customers who did not have good experiences with the Waste King L-8000. Some find the gasket to be too hard to put on, and when they called Waste King to find out what they should do, they were met with apathy and an unenthusiastic attitude from customer service, if they were even able to reach customer service at all. Apparently, Waste King is closed on the weekends, which is when most people install such household products, so if you run into problems for whatever reason, you will have to wait until weekday hours in order to get in contact with someone. This can really be a problem if you try to install the unit during the weekend and run into a problem.
The Waste King L-8000 scored a solid 4.6 out of 5 stars. With nearly 80% of the reviewers scoring the model at the top of the scale with 5 stars, it’s clear to see why the Waste King L-8000 is a favorite among homeowners. Most everyone has commented on how easy to install the unit is, not to mention how quiet it is compared to other or older models.
